Project Description

Title: Some effects on popular discourse of media convergence on the internet
Supervisor(s): Associate Professor Keng Chua
Date Begun: January 1997

Degree: Ph.D.
Format: HTML

Description:

PhD project. A study of the ways in which marginal people and communities are represented on the internet. How these representations differ, resemble, or contrast in commercially driven internet/web sites and 'alternative' internet/web sites respectively. The study includes cross-cultural analysis of the trajectory of various signs across socially disparate cultures, and the variant meanings of the 'popular'. I am taking the Zapatista Website as a starting point, as genuinely cross-cultural media site demonstrating effective forms of resistance and opposition. The Zapatista website can be seen in the historical context of the various guerilla/revolutionary media systems that developed out of the Central American struggles. The transformation of the signs and symbols of the struggle can be tracked across cultures, from their origins in the struggles of marginalised people, to representations in the technically sophisticated media of the privileged societies of advanced capitalism. I am using my own website to explore some of the ideas an principles emerging from my researches. The implications of online theses is part of this. I am interested to see what kinds of methodological issues may arise out of this. At this stage I am simply manually entering the html markup codes and tags by means of a notepad editor.
