Description:
Field of my research is the transformation of the landscape in Japan, during the passage of the country into Modernism. The research is attempting to register differences and transformations on the notion and use of the landscape between distinct stages of Japanese modernity:
a.Edo Period (early Modernism, 1600-1868),
b.Meiji (1868-1912)- Taisho (1916-1928) period,
c.Post-War Japan.
The research's interest lies in investigating how landscape transformations have been 'inscribed' on both the geographical and visual field, or else, the intersection of the landscape as both a physical and cognitive entity. Aim of the research is to investigate the relation between the geographical imagery and the dominant ideology- national identity of each time. It will analyse the way the landscape has been perceived, depicted or debated, through the particular issues, fantasies or epistemological frameworks, that each historical period has addressed.
