Sappho and Phaon-- Author's Notes.
1. Leucata was a promontory of Epirus, on the top of which
stood a temple dedicated to Apollo. From this promontory despairing
lovers threw themselves into the sea, with an idea, that, if they
survived, they should be cured of their hopeless passions. The Abbe'
Barthelemi says, that, "many escaped, but others having perished, the
custom fell into disrepute; and at length was wholly abolished."--

2. Sex mihi natales ierant, cum lecta parentis
Ante diem lacrymas ossa bibere meas.
Arsit inops frater, victus meretricis amore;
Mistaque cum turpi damna pudore tulit. Ovid.
