About the
Project
"Hart Crane: Fragments of The Broken Tower" was developed by Professor Stephen Cushman (English Language and Literature, University of Virginia) and Amanda Watson (2004-05 CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow in Scholarly Information Resources, University of Virginia Library), with the participation of the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, Rare Materials Digital Services, and the Electronic Text Center.
This collection highlights a set of materials by and about the poet Hart Crane from the Small Special Collections Library. Included are digitized versions of two of Crane's earliest published poems ("October-November" and "Fear," in the 1918 Pagan Anthology), his 1927 correspondence with the Virginia Quarterly Review, a 1926 letter from Crane to the poet Yvor Winters, and three typescript drafts of his last poem, "The Broken Tower." Taken together, the collection brings together materials from both the beginning and end of Crane's poetic career.
