Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber was born in New Hampshire and emigrated to Boston to pursue a career in journalism. He worked for the Boston Daily Post and the Boston Saturday Evening Gazette. Shillaber achieved some literary fame through humorous works written under the pen name "Mrs. Ruth Partington."
