Catharine Maria Sedgwick, one of the first American women authors to gain prominence, was born and educated in Massachusetts. She gained fame as a writer of "moral" tales, which were quite popular in her day. Sedgwick's A New England Tale is considered America's first domestic novel. Other popular Sedgwick books included Hope Leslie and Married or Single?. Sedgwick was held in high regard by both the reading public and her peers.
