Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward, born Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, spent her life in New England. Her first novel, The Gates Ajar, concerned life after death, and generated a great deal of discussion (as well as fame for its author). Her other works include Hedged In and The Silent Partner.
