Joseph Clay Neal was born in Philadelphia. A journalist and humorist, Neal founded the Saturday Gazette, and was known for characterizing the "loafer" in society. His works include Charcoal Sketches; or, Scenes in a Metropolis; Peter Ploddy and Other Oddities; and The Misfortunes of Peter Faber, and Other Sketches.
