Works in the Collection Biographies
John Howard Payne, dramatist and actor, was born in New York City. He collaborated with Washington Irving on Charles the Second; or, The Merry Monarch ; and Richelieu: A Domestic Tragedy. Payne put on his own plays at Sadler's Wells Theatre, which he leased. Playwriting did not always bring Payne the steadiest income--he was imprisoned as a debtor. His works include Clari, the Maid of Milan; wherein is found the familiar phrase "Home, Sweet Home."
