John Lothrop Motley, historian and diplomat, was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He served as minister to Austria (1861-67) and England (1869-70). Lothrop's works include Morton's Hope; or, The Memoirs of a Provincial; Merry-Mount: A Romance of the Massachusetts Colony; and History of the United Netherlands, from the Death of William the Silent, to the Twelve Years' Truce-1609 .
