Mary Abigail Dodge was born in Massachusetts. For many years, she taught science in a high school in Hartford, Connecticut. She later moved to Washington D. C. to serve as a governess, and began contributing essays and stories to magazines. Dodge often wrote under the pseudonym "Gail Hamilton."
