Maria Gowen Brooks, also known as Maria del Occidente, was born in Massachusetts about 1795. Brooks's principal works of poetry are Zophiel, or The Bride of Seven, based on the story of Sara in the Book of Tobit, and Idomen, or the Vale of Yumuri, which is partly autobiographical. Brooks spent time in New York and Cuba as well as in her native state. She died on November 11, 1845.
