Maria Susanna Cummins was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1827. Her literary career began around 1850 with contributions to the Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals. Her first novel, The Lamplighter, enjoyed immense popularity. Her other works include Mable Vaughn and El Fureidis.
