Thomas Buchanan Read, poet and painter, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He spent his later years in Rome and Florence, and painted Thackeray and Browning. Read became a writer at Longfellow's urging. His works include Poems; Lays and Ballads; and the poems "Sheridan's Ride" ; "Drifting" ; and "The Closing Scene".
