His diverse works include The Father (1789; a comic play, later published as The Father of an Only Child), Life of George Frederick Cooke (1813), Life of Charles Brockden Brown, The American Theatre (1832), History of the Arts of Design in the United States (1834), and Thirty Years Ago; or the Memoirs of a Water Drinker (1836; a novel).
