    My Dear Dr. Davis:
    September 20, 1937

It is with regret I learn that you are discontinuing your residence in Richmond. Your withdrawal from the group so vitally concerned with the problems of education and race relations, will be a great loss to our part of the country.

I want to tell you how much I appreciate your valuable service, not only to the negro people whom you have served directly with such sympathy and kindness through the years, but I appreciate all you have done for our whole Southland. You have given yourself to the great task of teaching people to live together harmoniously, with wonderful success. Your sincerity and courage heve inspired and helped all of us uho have had the privilege of knowing you.

May you live long to continue to encourage and help those who are struggling for a better life. With every good wish for you, I am:

    Very sincerely yours,

    Janie Porter Barrett
