Letter from Helen Crone Nolte to Emilie Lawrence Reed, February 14, 1931

Richmond, Va
February 14, 1931.
My dear Mrs. Reed,

    As a school girl
I always dreamed of becoming
a nurse, but the hands
of fate guided me in
another direction. However,
my dreams along nursing
lines are rekindled in
the hope that someday
I may have a son, who
will be interested in the
medical profession, and
that is the secret of my

story to you.

    Until a few months ago,
that is prior to my marriage,
I lived with my mother in
Washington. I was engaged in
work which detailed me to
Walter Reed Hospital, and there
I smelt of the things which
meant so much to me.

    My mother was born in
North Carolina child of Christine
and Thomas J. White, and
Dr. Reed was, I believe, a
cousin of my grandfather,
so that fact, made me very
proud to work in an institution
which bare the name of one

related to my mother, who had
so famed himself as did your
husband.

While my request at this time
may seem a little premature.
I would like to make it nevertheless
I am young and only married
a few months, but I have dreams.
If God should give me two
sons in this life, may I name
one after Dr. Walter Reed?
And is there some word
of encouragement that I might
pass to the son I hope to have
which comes from the memory
of a doctor whose name he
bears, or from the wife he
cherished? which will

stimulate a desire in him to
be in the medical profession?

    Maybe this may seem strange
to you, but it is one of the
secrets of my heart.

    May I thank you now
and wish for you much
happiness in life.

Cordially
