My dear Truby:

I am much interested in what you said Friday
evening concerning Reed and the other members of his staff in
Havana. Some of it was new to me. I knew about Dean and
Carroll, but did not know that Lazear had been intentionally,
bitten by infected mosquitoes. I am still curious as to one
point. Reed returned to Havana, learned of the cases of Dean,
Lazear and Carroll and then made his plans. What I would
like to know is this: Did he again return to the United States
before attempting to carry out his plans?

I was glad to hear your statement as to Reed's
undoubted leadership because there were men in the room who
have taken in the past the opposite attitude and push the claims
of Carroll to the fore.

    With best wishes, I am

Very sincerely yours,
