I have your Favor of the sixth Instant, as also that of the 26th ulto. inclosing the Bills of Exchg. of which I inform'd you (1) by the Return of Page who I hope will get down before Mr Braxton leaves Town, in which case you will have an oppy. of geting an order on Willing & Morris from my Son for what money you may want in this Place. He has an order from those Gentn. for about a thousand Pounds but as that will not be near the Sum he will have occasion for to Execute his Commission, you may enlarge it to double or treble the sum as you shall see cause. I have used every endeavour in my Power to fall on some mode of transacting money matters betwixt this Place and ours, without laying you under the Disagreeable necessity of Drawing Bills, but find it is not to be done, as all intercourse of Trade betwixt the two Countries is at an end, if Ben succeeds in his Business perhaps it may be more easy hereafter.
The Person you furnish'd with an order on Duval is not the Capt. I mention'd to you. Mr Morris has seen your Letter and gave for answer that he would pay his Drafts when presented, the other is for a Sum not exceeding sixty Pounds, which he is also to pay, but perhaps it may never be Presented to you as the order is to you, or any Committee that it may be presented to. Some Sailors it seems rose on the Poor man, took his Vessel from him, set him on shore and went off, he expected to Virga. He is in pursuit of them and being in want of money is furnish'd with our order at Morris's request, I think it Probable the Villains are with our Devil of a Governour.
I have an order in my Possession Drawn by Mr Thos Mathews on you for three hundred thirty three and a third Dollars, advanced to him by Gen. Washington. The Congress have Desired us to have it negotiated, if you think fit to pay it, you may give the money to Ben and take his Rect. and I will have it Settled here. I did not think it safe to trust the original but have Inclosed you a Copy. Mathews and Robinson are here and will set off for Virga. in two or three Days.(2)
Our Devil of a Governor goes on at a Devil of a rate indeed, but I hope Providence in its good time will bring him to acct. for all his missdoings .
We have no late News from Canada. I wish that matter may go on well, an excellent officer Commands there but he is Weak. I sent the Kings Speech & the proceedings of the Parlit. on it by the last Post from which you will see we have nothing to expect but Fire and Sword. I am Dr Sir, your most obedt Servt, Benj Harrison
P.S. Fifteen Ream of Paper are come in, we shall have the rest we are told next Week, as soon as it comes we will Dispatch a Waggon im-
mediately with it. B H

2 Mathews and Robinson had been taken prisoner by Lord Dunmore and sent to Boston. In order to enable them to return to Virginia, Washington had advanced them £100. See JCC, 4:54, 56; and Washington, Writings (Fitzpatrick), 4:197-98.
