AKIVA, (AQIBA) ben Joseph (50-135):

   JEWISH RABBI who played a crucial role in preserving JUDAISM after the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. He is credited with creating the TALMUD and laying the foundation for later rabbinic scholarship. He was executed for supporting a revolt against the Romans.
