As the period is at hand for the business of the Hotel keepers to be acted upon for the insuing year I have this day dispatched to Mr. Madison my views upon the subject, and as the time is too short for him to communicate with me on it, I presume he will send you immediately the instructions of the Executive Comtee. To meet the possible miscarriage of my letter to Mr. Madison or any other cause of failure in him to act within the proscribed time -- I now transmit my views to you, that this important interest of the U. may be provided for in time --
I have presented to Mr. Madison two plans in relation to the Hotels keepers -- My first is to dismiss the Whole of the present set by giving them notice on the st. Decr., except Minor, and appointing but one other Hotel keeper, while the number of Students do not exceed 110. or 115: -- and stipulating with those two Hotels keepers, that they shall pay the rents upon the Vacant Hotels: So that the Institution will lose nothing of its income While the Hotel keepers may make something worth the attention of such men as we ought to have there -- I can only expect to get by insuring a number of boarders not less than 45 or 50 -- If therefore, you hear nothing from Mr. Madison -- before the first Decr. you will proceed to give the notice as above -- and in this case, I should prefer Major James Carr to fill the other Hotel as he is first on the list of applicants as well as possessing from all I can learn, the requisite qualifications for the Station --
From the inclosed Extract furnished me by Mr. Trist from the proceedings of the Board of Visitors you will see the authority given to the Executive Comtee.,
P.S. As you will not act upon the above instruction but under the condition of not hearing from Mr. Madison I must request you will not permit it to be known to those whose interests will be unfavorably affected by it, until the period at which it will be necessary to give the notice --
