John Hartwell Cocke to Arthur Spicer Brockenbrough
14 April 1823

Bremo 14. April 1823
Dear Sir,

I had duly recd. yours by Mr. Cabell, but not having reached home until late Saturday, I was unable to prepare Charles & the boys for their departure earlier than Tomorrow -- Had Mr. Chamberlain not have arrived, they wou'd have set out in the morning -- I send seven Boys with Charles -- one of whom I intend for Mr. Nielson -- The Six I intended for you before the rect. of Mr. Nielsons note, are Anthony, Giles, Mike, Frank, Mat, & Ben, Gilbert I have added to the number for Mr. N -- all except the latter have had more or less experience in bearing off bricks -- but any arrangement you may make will be satisfactory to me in relation to which of them Mr. Nielson Shall have -- All that I have to stipulate, is to request that Mr. N -- will not permit him to be idle. -- and if he wou'd give him occasional employment with tools, I shou'd prefer him to take Anthony, as he is an industrious & steady boy from all I can learn of him. --

Shou'd you want another moulder, in the course of 2 or 3 months I shall probably be able to spare one -- and I shall be particularly anxious to do so provided there wou'd be a prospect of employing them at some period in the course of the work in laying bricks at which they are both rough hands --

Be so good as to inform Mr. Gorman that my Stone Cutters are at present engaged in doing some Masonry for me which will not be finished for a Month or two -- after which time I shall be glad to hire them to him -- In the mean time I shall be glad to hear, what price he offers -- One of them is adequate to cutting any plain moulding -- the other two are rough hands. -- Yours respectfully

John H. Cocke
