I am Suprized you should have Lost temper at a man mearly becaus he wished to be Paid A full demand for his Labour & talents, you also seem to Lay much Stress on a written agreement and you are so good as to Copy a Part to Put me in mind of wat I alredy knew, but my Very good Friend dont you remember that that Papur was considerd by you and me as only the Heads of ouer Engagemt we did not think it at all necesary to mention Every Item, -- but I should think that you do remember ouer Conversation at that time as respects the Extra Charge of Lead -- Prehaps through the Crowd of Buisness that Subject may have Passed on, This much I must say that it has Learnt me Knowledge never to trust to Such Documents again. you then go on to Charge me with altering the original Price Papur which you Signed -- and I thought had made a Close Copy -- I Suppose it a mistaek I do not Suppose you meant to omit any thing. but you did not Show me that Papur to my knowledge I tharfor on this Point think you have treated me unhandsom. again in a Very High Tone you ask is it Possible to make any one <lower> than the Casting of Masks and Lead Cost the Price I noted -- I do not ask you Sir to <beleav> it but If you think Proper to order the Same things Cast from the same Plaster Models I fancy you will be Charged over that If they are don in the Stile of those Sent to you -- and in the same tone you say it is well for me that you did not see the Papur I Sent to Mr Jefferson before the dissiion of the Board that If you had I may be assured they would not have Allowed me the Extra Charge -- this Sir is most Insulting and Can only be thought of with Sillines
I know that you are but you only are the Representative of those Gentlemn which Compose the Visitors -- but at the same time it was no Part of your dute to be illiberal to me and you ought to reflect that Every Man Alike has a full Claim to reward for Labor or Talent, In his Situation in Life be wat it may Sir I Am with great Respect Your Obt Sert --
W. J. Coffee
I must now Notice your observations on wat you Call deficences, you know Sir you have had those Boxes Containing the ornaments allmost four Mounts and not till now have you found out any deficences, would it not have been better to have overhaled thos Packages before this time and to have Complained sooner, in which Case you would have given me a faier Chance but as it now Stands there seems to be no End to the Troubl this give Still I feel an Honorable wish that their Should be no with holding that which Justly belongs to you and tharefor If you will by return State wat you want to Make up for Pavilion No. 1. as stated in your Leter Immeadetly at my Expenes, as regards Pavilion No. 2. and No 5. I find by a note made at the time of Packing -- that the Box No. 1. and No. 2. Contained the whol of those things Enquir for, I know not how they Could have got out again as you say you have recevd 12 Cases. (<Box No. 1 Contand 65. Sculs do No. 2 do Pattur ox flurns 48 Pattur Box No 2 16. dol.>) And in you Note Sent for me to work from Stating the Quanites of Each ornament you say Pavilion no 2. has 51 Metops and No 5. has 75. in which Case their ought to be One Scull over. you know The heads <Pattur> The flouer are Placed alturnately. I therefore Consider all sent -- and in Most Cases many sent over in Case of Aney misforetin on which accnt I do not think it right to detain aney Part of my Bill. This much I Positively Say That I Sent them from This City. and Suppose they are mislyd and hope by this time the Mistake is found out -- If through Mistake I had forgot they would be with me they are not hear, and my note tells me I have sent them. as to 75 flouers which you Say you have no Space for -- They was only Sent to give you Choice for The <Standes or Spandls> -- but as you do not use them. and as they are mine I must beg you will Carefuly Pack them & Send them to Monticello -- The 7<illegible> <illegible> flowers are as you Supose ment for Pavilion No. 10 Alturnately Put up and The One The most Open for the <Planiers> of the same Pavilion -- Should you not be Able to find those thing the Sculs and <Patturs> you of Corse will want them but I Confess I Should not like to replace them as I am Confident they have been Sent and tharfore only <illegible> your remitanes on acount of the whole Bill the Ballance Due to me being at this moment is $66.37. which you will be so good as to advise me on whom in Richmond I may Draw a Bill Payable at Sight from the 15th of May. on doing them over again If you wish me I beg To be Clearly understood that the Price will be `3/6' -- Each N.Y. currency Payble as soon as your Agent in Richmond receves the Bill of Enshipment Signed by the Capt. Paying incumbent Expences of Shiping Sums Carting and Packing in cluding Papers & Cases on those condistion I Shall be hapy to fit you
You ask me why the <Pattur must or most> as you Very Justly Suppose & P. No. 2 and 5 are so Small. I Can only answer that I think them Suficiently Large for the Space of b.b. and g.g. had I not have thought so I had nothing to Prevent my making them Larger.
You Mention you have over 16 or 18 Sculs of the Ionic Frize over wat is wanted as I have Stated before you have over wat Could be missing of most Ornaments they Should be Put Carfuly by: but you ought to have including them in my Accnt on the Principal that you act on that of Curtailing which has been to Much the Case in my Bill --
With respects to money matters I acknowledge to the recept of a Draft from Brockinbrough & Harvie of Richmond for the Sum of three Hundred and ninty Dollars fourteen Cents -- at 3 days Sight 3 days Grace <has> become due on the 25 of April so that I <illegible> my Contract before spoken off and as you <illegible> you had reserved that Sum in Februay I <assume> you did not Contrive to let me have it on April the 1st. but it now is not in accordance with Mr Jeffersons Accnt of the Same that being $414.65 yours is Only $390.14
NB. While I have ben writing I have been thinking how this mistake Could have taken Place as related to the Sculls and I do believe they are gone on to Bedford but in which of Mr Jefferson Packages I do not know -- five Cases I find by the Bils of Lading are gone to Bedford four of which only Should have gone in that Case I have Commited an Error
