If the appointment within recommended, can be made, without interfering, with the appointment of Buchanan, already recommended by Gen'l Scott, let it be done.

Footnotes

1 American Art Association Anderson Galleries Catalog 4325, April 29-30, 1937, No. 322. According to the catalog description, Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from George B. McClellan, recommending Major John Oakes for inspector general. There is, however, no record of John Oakes. Major James Oakes of the Fifth Cavalry, who was later made inspector of cavalry, may have been the man McClellan recommended, and Lieutenant Colonel Robert C. Buchanan may have been the officer recommended by Scott, but neither is listed in the inspector general's office by the U.S. Official Register.
