There is a similar story told on another occasion. On an excursion with some riding companions, the group had occasion to cross a stream of water at which a walking traveler asked Mr. Jefferson to transport him over, to which Mr. Jefferson readily agreed. When the traveler was later asked if he had realized that it was the President of the United States whom he had requested to transport him, the man was astonished, and replied that the older gentleman only looked like the most likely one to grant his request.
