Note: Allen Johnson (1870–1931), of Lowell, Massachusetts, served as Professor of History at Iowa (now Grinnell) College (1898–1905), Bowdoin College (1905–1910), and Yale (1910–1926). His Jefferson and His Colleagues (1921) appeared in volume 15 of the popular series Chronicles of America (50 vol., 1918–21), of which he served as editor. Johnson's distinguised career culminated with the American Council of Learned Societies appointing him editor in chief of the Dictionary of American Biography, of which he prepared six volumes before his death.
