Calamus 2

At some point after inserting the trial title "Scented Herbage of my breast.', Whitman decided either to remove the poem from the 'Calamus' group of to use it as part of a seperate cluster. He replaced the trial title with, simply, 'Calamus", adding the ambiguous notation '? Calamus. ? to lead the seperate vol?'. Would No.2 lead the next (1867) edition of Leaves? Would it lead 'the seperate vol' of only "Calamus' poems? Or would the entire "Calamus" group except No 1 lead the next edition? Whatever he had in mind at this time, in 1867, No 2 ('Scented Herbage of My Breast") follows No 1 (In Paths Untrodden') and "Calamus" follows "Children of Adam", with the poem "Excelsior" seperating them (Golden 344).
