First published in 1855, Leaves of Grass was revised
by Whitman for the publication of a total of six editions. By "editions" This level of the hypertext
will generally discuss the four "new" editons--1860, 1867, 1871, and
1881--in which the "Calamus" cluster appeared. Some emphaisis, however, will be given to the 1876 "centennial" edition in which the poet reconfigured several of the "Calamus" poems as a symbol of national unity through "adhesiveness." Links to Joel
