This site has been under construction since June, 1996. Fresh material is added on a weekly basis.

Visitors: Please read the introductory materials presented in the left column, then enter the critical edition. After that you can navigate by clicking on highlighted text and icons within the hypertext. Each page is a prototype of the structure I am currently translating into SGML for electronic publication using the Panorama SGML browser. Each of the items under "Commentaries" will eventually constitute an active link.

Note: This HTML site is a model of the SGML Calamus project I will be creating for some months (or years) to come. In a practical sense, I am using this site as a "clipboard" to hold materials which I will then translate into SGML documents. Thus I have only represented poems 1 and 2 from the 1860 edition in their various manuscript iterations and printed variants, and only manuscripts from the Trent and Barrett collection. I am saving the literally hundreds of files I have created for the ultimate version of this project in SGML.

To peruse this project, within the "Index to Poems" page, select poems number 1 or 2 to browse the poems and manuscripts. To see the "Calamus" portion of the Cliffton Barrett Collection of Leaves of Grass manuscripts, click on the "MSS" icon. This section of the edition will eventually be connected to the "Calamus" portion of Fredson Bowers' Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass--A Parallel Text.
