1890 CENTURY MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION

YOU THINK TRAVIS DIDN'T CRY WHEN I TOLD HIM GOODBY?

This piece is a memoir of Travis, Wilby's loyal and affectionate slave. The scene illustrated here resembles the familiar iconography of such a slave sending his master off to the Civil War, but in fact takes place just after the War, when Wilby must leave the newly-freed Travis in charge the old plantation while he seeks an office job in the city. Despite such a change, Travis remains devoutly loyal to the Major's interests, later nursing him back to health, etc. This illustration is by A. B. Frost, who like Kemble specialized in "southern" illustrations.
