W. T. Smedley's illustrations for "Marse Chan" were drawn in 1892 for a giftbook edition of that one story. This drawing, of the moment when "Ole Marse Chan" puts his newborn son into Sam's hands in front of the assembled crowd of admiring slaves, is the frontispiece of In Ole Virginia.
