This syllabus outlines the major subjects for each day. Each morning will start with a brief review and reminder of the salient features of the previous day.

Monday:

am: Introductions; A Practical Introduction to SGML and XML.

pm: Using the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) DTD. Using TEI files.

Tuesday:

am: Text and Image Scanning -- a hands-on session.

pm: Data control and other metadata issues. DCMI, MARC, the TEI header, OAI, METS, MODS. Project planning and funding.

Wednesday:

am: The Great Transcription: using the TEI Guidelines for manuscript materials.

pm: Visit to Special Collections Digitizing lab. Introduction to stylesheets and transformations.

Thursday:

am: Visit to Special Collections. Another form of XML: Encoded Archival Descriptions.

pm: Final transcription and markup. Digital images of textual items: creation, manipulation, uses, and control.

Friday:

am: The Great Parsing: validating TEI documents.

pm: XML as an interchange format: automated TEI to HTML conversion; demonstration of TEI to pdf/ebook conversions. The final product and review.
