In this example one can see how simple
SGML
can be used to provide a
structure wherein the entries are clearly marked as such, where
the bibliographical data is a distinct section within the entry, and
where such categories as author, title, place of publication,
publisher, and date. Other potential tagged categories could include price,
pagination and foliation, language, condition, etc.
Once these tags are in place they can be used to control the
appearance of the text on the page (highlight all titles; suppress all
entries later than 1800) and to provide a structure that a search tool
can make use of (give me all entries including "Chaucer" not in the
author field; search all entries dated 1600-1775 for the phrase
"contemporary calf"; give me all entries published in Edinburgh, etc).
