Introduction to Electronic Texts & Images
July 21-25; August 4-8, 1997
These digital facsimiles of Civil War letters were created by the participants of David Seaman's Introduction to Electronic Texts and Images, RBS courses 26 and 46, Summer 1997.
The texts are all encoded in SGML, according to the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines, with an accompanying Encoded Archival Descriptions (EAD) collection guide. The page images have been scanned at 24-bit colour and at 400 dpi. They exist off-line as large archival TIFF file format files (average size, 20-30 megabytes each), created by Felicia Johnson in the UVa Special Collections Dept., which have then been batch-processed in the Electronic Text Center to create both highly-compressed JPEG files (average size, 80 KB each) and two rather less highly-compressed ones (average size, 200 KB and 400 KB respectively).
Final encoding and annotating were done by Carolyn Fay and Lisa Spiro of the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia.
