Bible Windows

Note: Currently, this CD cannot be run on any of the computers in the Electronic Text Center.

I. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF STRUCTURE AND CONTENT:

Bible Windows 3.0 is a Bible program for Microsoft Windows. Bible Windows provides easy and complete access to the Analytical Greek New Testament and the Hebrew Old Testament as well as the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) and the Latin Vulgate. The Greek and Hebrew texts are parsed texts. This allows you to search on the dictionary forms of words and to search for grammatical features.

II. STARTING UP BIBLE WINDOWS:

Place Bible Windows 3.0 CD-ROM in the PC. Click on the "My Computer" icon, then click on the CD-ROM drive ("D" on most of the PCs; "F" on the Dell computer in the corner). Finally, choose the folder called "BWP" and click on the "BWP" icon. If you do not see these icons, please ask a staff member for assistance.

III. USING BIBLE WINDOWS

When you begin the program, it will automatically take you to the Main Menu (listed below) where you will find introductory textual links that guide you through the program. It may be helpful to imagine the Bible Windows 3.0 program, in look and feel, as a World Wide Web browser without the Internet connection.

  • Online Bible
  • Searching

III.b

In order to understand basic navagational tools for the Bible Windows 3.0 program thoroughly, we recommend that you work through the Bible Window Basics introduction available on the CD-ROM. The selected Bible Window Basics functions listed below are here to guide you through rudimentary tasks. However, in order to search texts, for example, you will need to consult either the print or on-line version of the Bible Window Basics instructions.

Bible Window Basics

This chapter contains some general instructions for using Bible Windows. Some of the instructions assume some basic Windows skill. If you are just starting with Windows, try playing the Windows Solitaire game to get the hang of using the mouse, resizing windows, selecting menu items and using dialog boxes.

  • Opening a File
  • Synchronized Windows
  • Jumping to a Verse
  • Fonts
  • Bookmarks
  • Interlinear Display
  • Show Parsing
  • Show Dictionary
  • Power Mousing!(Right Button Menu)
  • Starting a Grammatical Search when Viewing
  • Maximizing a Window
  • Closing a Window to an Icon
  • Closing a File
  • Exiting Bible Windows

  • Opening a File
  • From the Files menu, select Open. This will produce a sub-menu which lists all the possible files that can be opened. If you have not purchased all the additional modules, you will see some of the items grayed out. When a Bible is selected, you will be given a list of the books in that Bible. Select the book, then click on Open to open at the start of the book, or click on Open At to open the boot a specific chapter and verse. If you select Open At, a dialog box will open so that you can type in the chapter and verse.

  • Synchronized Windows
  • The Edit menu contains the options to "Lock" and "Unlock" windows. Whenever a locked window is scrolled to another verse, all other "locked" windows will move to that verse. Any of the locked windows can be manually changed and all the other windows will synchronize. This feature allows you, for example, to have more than one window open in Hebrew Genesis and have only one of the views of Genesis scroll with an English Version. This feature is accessible through the toolbar. The lock icon locks a file and the unlock icon unlocks a file. New windows always start unlocked. When a window is unlocked, the Lock icon is ACTIVE and the Unlock icon is DISABLED. When a window is locked, the Lock icon is DISABLED and the Unlock icon is ACTIVE.

  • Jumping to a Verse
  • When opening a file, if you press on "Open At" rather than "Open", you will get the Goto dialog box and thus jump to a given chapter and verse. When you are viewing a file, the View menu option "Goto Ref", allows you to go directly to a chapter and verse. To move from the chapter box to the verse box, either click in the verse box or use the TAB key to move from the chapter box to the verse box. This feature is accessible through the toolbar. Use the Goto Ref icon

  • Power Mousing!(Right Button Menu)
  • Bible Windows uses the right mouse button to access the most used commands. Place the cursor over the word you're interested, and press the button. Try it, you'll like it! When you first start up the program before you have opened any windows, you can also use the right button to open a file or start a search. The function of the right mouse button changes depending on what type of window you have open! It automatically closes Parsing and Dictionary windows ("help" windows) and it produces a menu for texts and search results.

  • Closing a File
  • If you want to completely close one book, use the menu box at the upper left hand corner of the window. Double clicking on the menu box at the upper left hand corner will close the window. The short-cut key for closing a child window is F4 (N.B. F4 closes the whole application so use this "short cut" with care!) All the options for resizing or closing a book can be accessed through the menu box at the upper left hand corner of the window.

IV. EXITING BIBLE WINDOWS AND REMOVING THE CD-ROM

After you have enjoyed exploring Bible Windows 3.0 you can exit by three different ways:

  1. Use the "Exit" menu item from the "Files" menu. When you exit this way, Bible Windows will make sure you really want to exit Bible Windows and then give you the option of saving your current desktop. Bible Windows remembers only the text files you have open, not search lists or help windows.
  2. From the menu box at the upper left hand corner of the window, select "Close". This will immediately close the Bible Windows program without saving your desktop.
  3. ALT-F4 keystroke immediately closes Bible Windows without saving your desktop.

Please place the CD-ROM back in its case and return it to an Etext Center assistant.
